Position Changes & New Opportunities: Why Versatility Matters More Than Ever in NJCP

LAS VEGAS, Nev. / CRWE Press Release / July 10, 2026 — Some of the best football careers began with a position change.
A high school quarterback shifts his focus and becomes a safety. A slightly undersized tight end grows into an offensive tackle. A wide receiver realizes his lateral quickness makes him better suited to lock down opposing wideouts as a defensive back. Throughout the history of football, players find unexpected opportunities and extend their careers simply by adapting to where they can best help a team win.
That reality has become even more important in today's recruiting landscape. Some athletes discover that a different position better matches their skills after high school.
The National Junior College Prep (NJCP) Football League gives high school graduates and transfer athletes another season to continue competing while exploring where they fit best on the field. A full football season gives coaches and players the opportunity to evaluate strengths, make adjustments, and continue developing within a competitive environment.
The Best Position Is Not Always the First One
High school football often asks athletes to play wherever their team needs them most. A player might spend three years at quarterback simply because he is the best natural athlete on the team, even though his physical traits and aggressive mentality translate much better to strong safety or outside linebacker at the college level.
As players continue growing physically, those opportunities can change. Increased size, improved speed, and raw experience often open the door to a completely different position that better matches an athlete's skill set. However, making that transition rarely happens overnight. It requires countless reps, dedicated position coaching. It takes repetition, coaching, and game experience to build confidence at a new position.
Versatility Creates Opportunity
Being able to contribute in more than one role has become an asset throughout football.
An athlete who understands multiple positions often develops a broader understanding of the game while giving coaches additional flexibility when building a roster. Whether that means contributing on offense, defense, or special teams, versatility can create opportunities that may not have existed before. That versatility can also give coaching staffs ultimate flexibility when building a roster or dealing with mid-season injuries.
Whether that means a defensive end learning how to drop into coverage as an outside linebacker, or a backup running back turning himself into an elite special teams gunner, versatility may create opportunities that were previously unavailable.
Within NJCP, athletes spend an entire season working with experienced coaches, practicing within a team environment, and competing against unfamiliar opponents. Those experiences can help players continue refining their role while adding valuable game film along the way.
Finding the Right Fit
Not every football journey follows a straight line. Some players remain at the exact position they have played since youth leagues and continue to dominate. Others discover that embracing a different role allows their natural athletic abilities to stand out in completely new ways.
The important part is having the opportunity to continue competing while that process unfolds.
NJCP provides high school graduates and transfer portal athletes with a full, padded season to build that specific experience. Some position changes happen by necessity. Others reveal where an athlete belongs all along. Having another season gives players the opportunity to find that answer on the field rather than wondering what might have been.
