Scheduled for Saturday, June 13, at Pleasure Ridge Park High School (5910 Greenwood Road, Louisville, KY 40258), the event represents the final opportunity this summer for high school graduates, unsigned seniors, and transfer portal athletes to compete for a spot on the Thunder's inaugural 2026 roster.
As college football recruiting continues to evolve, opportunities have become increasingly competitive. The expansion of the transfer portal has created a crowded marketplace, forcing many talented athletes to seek alternative pathways to gain exposure, continue their development, and keep their collegiate football aspirations alive.
The Louisville Thunder's Final Tryout offers athletes a chance to showcase their abilities in front of coaches and evaluators while competing for a limited number of remaining roster positions. Participants will be evaluated on athleticism, position-specific skills, football IQ, character, and overall readiness to compete at the next level.

For years, Louisville and the state of Kentucky have lacked a dedicated junior college football pathway, leaving too many capable athletes with limited options after graduation. A Local Ecosystem Built to Support Athletes
To maximize community outreach and athlete support, Louisville Thunder has embedded its infrastructure within the city’s broader ecosystem. Through ongoing collaboration with Louisville Metro Parks & Recreation and direct communication lines with Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS), Kentucky’s largest district serving roughly 97,000 students, the organization has built a more credible, transparent local network designed to keep talent from falling through the cracks.
Just as important: the Thunder is actively building a player-support pipeline through strategic partnerships that address what many early-stage programs ignore, training access, injury care, mentorship, and life stability.
Performance + Health Partnerships: Norton + KORT
Louisville Thunder are currently supported by two cornerstone performance and sports medicine partners. Norton Sports Performance Health & Wellness Center is providing a direct training pathway for Thunder athletes. As of May, players have access to an affordable summer training option (including college open gym membership and position-specific football sessions), and the program is structured to scale into team training blocks during the season. This partnership helps ensure athletes are not just “working out,” but developing within a system aligned to collegiate expectations.
KORT Physical Therapy strengthens the Thunder’s commitment to athlete welfare by supporting the injury-prevention and recovery side of the pipeline, critical for a program that prioritizes long-term player health, availability, and performance. These partnerships matter because they create something rare for sport organizations: a development environment where athletes are coached, trained, and cared for like a true collegiate program, not a temporary opportunity.
Mentorship + Community Development: Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Kentuckiana
Louisville Thunder is also building beyond the field through community partnerships, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana, a relationship aligned with the Thunder’s core mission: football as the vehicle, development as the product. This work reinforces character, accountability, and long-range thinking exactly the traits college programs demand and young athletes often don’t have systematic access to. Thunder players have been given the opportunity to learn what it means to be Big Brothers and access to other mentorship-focused programs that will help them develop into strong members of their community.
Community Impact + Career Readiness: Metro United Way
The Thunder’s partnership efforts with Metro United Way reflect a broader commitment to workforce readiness and community uplift, connecting athletes to structures and support systems that extend beyond athletics. Last Wednesday, the Louisville Thunder program participated in Metro United Way's Day of Service. Alongside members of the community, the Thunder helped pack over 3,000 backpacks and 5,000 Healthy Snack Kits donated to provide support to the families of youth across Jefferson County when they head back to school.
Funding + Operational Sustainability: Five F’s Fundraising
Louisville Thunder is also working with Five F’s Fundraising to help strengthen the operational side of the program, because sustainability isn’t optional. When fundraising is structured correctly, it doesn’t just “raise money”, it funds athlete safety, reduces gaps in housing/transportation needs, and stabilizes the program so development isn’t dependent on emergency scrambles. A Teach-First Evaluation
The June 13 Final Tryout is structured as a live professional evaluation rather than a traditional football camp. Under the leadership of Head Coach Mike Reed, the Louisville Thunder coaching staff will conduct a comprehensive assessment designed to identify athletes capable of succeeding at the collegiate and post-secondary levels. Supporting the evaluation process are Associate Head Coach Chris Wolfe and Assistant Head Coach Kenneth Walker, who will help coordinate on-field activities and player evaluations. Event planning, logistics, and overall administrative coordination are being managed under the operational guidance of General Manager Jeremy Brown, ensuring a professional and organized evaluation experience for all participants.
The coaching staff is committed to a high-accountability, "teach-first" approach that mirrors the expectations athletes will encounter at the collegiate level. Head Coach Mike Reed, a United States Air Force Veteran with more than 25 years of leadership experience and coaching experience across the FBS, FCS, NAIA, and developmental football landscape, leads the program's commitment to discipline, development, and player advancement.
Athletes will be evaluated on technical execution, football IQ, physical measurables, coachability, and mental responsiveness. This professional evaluation environment allows the Thunder staff to identify players who possess the maturity, work ethic, and technical discipline necessary to thrive within the National Junior College Prep (NJCP) Football League's 18-team national platform.
The objective is not only to measure athletic ability, but also to determine which athletes are prepared to embrace the standards, accountability, and developmental process required for success at the next level.
